It turns out it was XP that was being the CPU hog when it was updating the system. #vmware idling at 3-10% with occasional spikes (McAfee?)
#vmware installed and working. Huge problem: it is maxing out one core of the iMac with "vmware-vmx" process. The CPU monitor is ALL RED.
